We all understand how important exercise is for the body, mind, and spirit. What many do not realize is that if you are chronically ill, injured, sleep-deprived, on a caloric restrictive diet, it’s possible for you to be overtraining at a much lower level of physical activity. The consequences can have a profound impact on your overall health and wellbeing.
From the competitive runner, cyclist, exercise enthusiast that does CrossFit, weight training, high-intensity interval training, or the weekend warrior participating in a Tough Mudder all are at potential risk for overtraining.
It doesn’t take much to be on a downward spiral. It is estimated that 61% of all serious runners go through a period of overtraining in their career.
Increase Performance
Keep your body optimized to perform at peak levels for longer periods of time without becoming fatigued.
Decrease Recovery Time
Stimulate proper healing quicker so your body rejuvenates and is ready to go sooner than ever.
Avoid Injuries
Stay healthy and avoid common injuries that hold back performance and keep you from competing at a high level.
The key to recovery is to reduce or stop anything more than moderate physical activity for some time. How long depends on symptoms severity and how long you’ve been overtraining. Focus on gentle activities for recovery such as walking in nature, yoga, or massage. Address any underlying stress-induced HPA-Axis dysregulation, inflammation, gut dysbiosis, nutrient depletion, hormone imbalances, and oxidative stress. Get plenty of sleep and nap during the day. Ensure you do not restrict calories or diet once overtrained. Your body needs an adequate supply of macronutrients especially protein and micronutrients.
What is Overtraining Syndrome / Burnout?
Overtraining syndrome occurs when an athlete doesn’t adequately recover after repetitive intense training, and can include fatigue, declining performance and potential injury. It’s admirable to train hard to succeed in your chosen sport. Logging many miles, spending hours at the gym and working hard day after day can certainly help you achieve your athletic goals. But too much training without sufficient recovery can hinder your progress — and even lead to a decline in your performance.
There are two classifications for too much exercise: overreaching and overtraining.
Overreaching is muscle soreness above and beyond what you typically experience that occurs when you don’t sufficiently recover between workouts. Overreaching usually happens after several consecutive days of hard training and results in feeling run down. Luckily, the effects of overreaching can be easily reversed with rest.
Overtraining occurs when an athlete ignores the signs of overreaching and continues to train. Many athletes believe that weakness or poor performance signals the need for even harder training, so they continue to push themselves. This only breaks down the body further.
Symptoms and warning signs of overtraining
It may be hard to know when you’re overtraining. “It’s natural and expected to feel fatigued after challenging training sessions,” Dr. Goolsby says. “But feeling like you aren’t recovering between sessions or experiencing overall fatigue and difficulty pushing yourself during workouts can be indicators of overtraining.”
Training-related signs of overtraining
Unusual muscle soreness after a workout, which persists with continued training
Inability to train or compete at a previously manageable level
“Heavy” leg muscles, even at lower exercise intensities
Delays in recovery from training
Performance plateaus or declines
Thoughts of skipping or cutting short training sessions
Lifestyle-related signs of overtraining
Prolonged general fatigue
Increase in tension, depression, anger or confusion
Inability to relax
Poor-quality sleep
Lack of energy, decreased motivation, moodiness
Not feeling joy from things that were once enjoyable
Dr Hewett is an outstanding chiropractor! My lower back and hips have never felt better! I enjoy the decompression treatments, because it helps open up the areas between by vertebrae…hopefully preventing my degenerative arthritis, in my spine, from getting worse. Dr Hewett’s staff is wonderful too! Very professional, knowledgeable and kind! I 100% recommend Hewett Chiropractic!
Dr hewett is a good dr. Definitely wants to help ya and see ya feeling better. Unfortunately I was seeking out a specific adjustment that is not offered currently by this establishment.(not sure if it will be at some point) the Y-Strap/ring dinger. I found a spot I had called previously before going to hewett and they called and was able to see me for the adjustment I was looking for. All in all I would definitely recommend him to people no problem. Hopefully he will integrate the Y-Strap into his practice at done point. Thanks doc, ya helped me get out of the agonizing neck pain but I just needed that extra adjustment.
I am simply amazed at the level of improvement in my daily life after just a few visits. I will recommend Dr. Hewett to EVERYONE. Thank you so much for the awesome treatment that I received.
Dr. Hewett is such caring, insightful, knowledgeable, beautiful person. He is honest and straight forward about treatments and possibility of success. Trust him, he can help, and if he can't he will be honest!
All around amazing guy! Does great work but also is very invested in helping you in all healthy lifestyle roles. Office staff is always great to work with! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Dr Hewett has done wonders for my back pain and works hard to create solutions as well as treatment. Everyone in his office is always so friendly and helpful!
Tyler knows his trade and is very passionate about it. He thinks outside the box from what you would usually get from a chiropractor. He won't just adjust you, he will provide you with ways to find a permanent solution to your aches and pains through simple daily exercises as well. Highly recommend if you are in the market for a chiropractor.
Absolutely the best! I have many issues being a horse trainer and Tyler has helped me so much not only with adjustments but also and so importantly teaching me how to strengthen my muscles to support how I use my body training horses. The friendliest service and truly listening to me about my issues.
Tyler Hewett is so thoughtful and caring with his work. He takes X-Rays first before anything. I wouldn’t have known I had a pars fracture if he wouldn’t have done an X-ray of my spine first. I’m so glad I decided to go to him before I continued lifting heavy in the gym. I definitely recommend him to anyone needing an adjustment, cupping, and any other work done. He’s great with athletes!
Dr. Hewett takes x-rays in his office before even adjusts you. He even explained quick and to the point what we needed to work on. Came up with a plan for how many visits I needed to fix some of my issues. After a few visits I bragged to my husband and he started going and our kids. I try to tell as many people as I can about him. He is definitely worth the trip. Even his front desk Ashley is worth the visit she's friendly, chatty and works hard. They are really quick responding to calls and text messages.
Dr. Hewett is very professional and had me feeling better after the first appointment. Very knowledgeable and friendly, I received the best adjustment I have ever had
Though I have struggled with chronic back pain for years now, a self inflicted neck injury is what got me in to Dr. Hewett's office. He was able to establish a treatment plan that worked for me on my first visit, now I have been seeing him for around 2 months and my neck pain is gone and my back pain is manageable. Dr. Hewett is friendly, explains what he's doing and why and genuinely cares about your well being. Seeing him has helped me tremendously, I recommend coming to him for any chiropractic needs.
Tyler is really good about letting you know what’s goin on with what you’re seeing him for and explains it in a way that you can understand without a degree. He’s a great guy who really cares about his patients, I’ve been to a few chiropractors but I believe my search for the right one has come to an end.
Update: I took my 2 yr old in to get adjusted to help with her clubbed feet and doctor Hewett did such a good job with her she was so at ease during the whole appointment which is surprising because she usually doesnt like strangers. If you have a child needing to be adjusted this is the doctor to see!!

Staff is friendly and quick to help when you walk in. Doc did an amazing job popping all my trouble spots! 10/10 would get my back cracked like a glow stick again by doctor Hewett!
Best chiropractor I’ve ever had. Hands down. Tyler truly wants you to feel your best and achieve long term solutions. So much more than just getting your back popped every single week. I started going 3x a week and currently have never felt better despite sitting for work 8-10 hours a day.

Can’t say enough good things about this place and their wonderful staff 🙌🏽🙏🏼
I’ve been looking for a local chiropractor for a while now to help with my back pain from playing golf. After one visit, Dr. Hewett made my back pain disappear. The atmosphere was great and the people were very personable and awesome customer service!
I had been experiencing pain that had been caused from me being in the roofing industry. Dr. Hewett is the man to go see! He was able to get me back to feeling normal and pain free after a few visits.
